Rising Star Tyla on Charting Her Own Path Under Rihanna’s Gargantuan Shadow

In the rising arc of Tyla’s budding career, admirers have discerned parallels between the young South African songstress and Barbadian pop titan, Rihanna. Naturally, the 22-year-old artist is aware of these analyses and recently shared her candid thoughts on being referred to in the same vein as the acclaimed music mogul.

Respectfully acknowledging the benchmarks established by the beloved Bad Gal, Tyla nonetheless expressed her resolve to establish a unique identity. “It’s flattering, because Rihanna is unparalleled. It’s a compliment,” the “Water” sensation disclosed during her interview with Cosmopolitan while gracing its latest cover. “However, I’m an individual artist—I’m Tyla. As my music and personality become more familiar, I trust fans will see and appreciate me uniquely. If people feel a need to connect me to something they know, that’s fine.”

Expressing further, Tyla stated – “We’re venturing into virgin territory which makes what we do unique and incomparable to anything else.”

Within the same interview, the Grammy laureate unveiled some other sources of inspiration that shaped her musical journey.

The “Art” artist fondly reminisced about her grandmother’s significant influence, “I have tremendous love for my grandmother. She would frequently regale us with tales of her singing days, and how she used to sing to financially aid her family. Her stories of traveling to distant competitions and emerging victorious have always served as motivation, making me strive harder to reach my goals.”

Earlier this year, Tyla launched her self-titled, debut album, a rich tapestry of diverse genres including amapiano and R&B, with impressive features from artists like Kelvin Momo, Tems, Gunna, Skillibeng, Becky G, and Travis Scott.

Commenting on her album to GRAMMY.com, Tyla said, “I envisioned this album as my introduction to the world. I believe I couldn’t have made a better introduction. This album is a musical embodiment of me, encapsulated into a 14-track project. Naturally, naming it ‘TYLA’ was the only option that felt right.”
